Ok, so I saw Frozen yesterday with my sisters and significant. and lemme tell you about olaf.. pls.
At first, you think he’s supposed to be comic relief - ha ha, a snowman who loves summer. How funny is that? But there are actually deeper reasons why Olaf loves summer:
He is the first in the movie to know what true love is and tell Anna about it. What does he tell her? Pay attention: "Love is sacrificing yourself for someone else, just like Kristoff brought you back here to Arendelle and disappeared forever." Then when Kristoff comes back, Olaf says, “Oh, too bad, guess he didn’t love you enough to disappear forever.” — Ha ha, another joke, right? NOPE:
Olaf is a snowman who loves summer, represents the childhood friendship between Anna and Elsa, is the first to recognize Kristoff’s love, and is the first to recognize Anna’s sacrifice in the end as an act of true love.
That’s when you remember — He is a snowman who “was created to love warm hugs.” That is, Olaf is the embodiment of the love between Anna and Elsa.
And what did Elsa do? She loved Anna so much, she disappeared forever to protect her. THAT’S what Olaf knows as “true love,” and why he recognizes it in others.
- How even though Kristoff loved her, he was willing to leave her in Arendelle even if it meant he couldn’t be with her.
- How Anna sacrificed herself to protect her sister, even if it meant dying: disappearing forever.
- And finally, Olaf himself: He knew that he was going to melt. When he started melting by the fire, he wasn’t surprised. Instead, he just said, “Some people are worth melting for.”
This is why Olaf loves summer so much. Because he was made to love “warm hugs,” and inside himself, he knows. He knows that warmth, that summer, means love, and love means that everyone will be okay. And he wanted that so badly. He wanted everyone to be okay, even if it meant that he would disappear forever. Because he is the embodiment of that kind of love.
Through his little jokes and quirky behavior, he is everything the movie was trying to teach us. He is the deepest character in the movie.
